Is your Teen Driver Prepared for a Routine Traffic Stop?
For teen drivers, independence on the road can be exciting. That excitement could quickly turn into anxiety if they are in an accident or are pulled over by law enforcement for any reason. Remember, the responding officer isn’t the only thing they may be concern about. Their minds could be bombarded with thoughts about, losing their driving privileges, or being late for school or work. While they are having all of these thoughts, they have to be able to respond appropriately to the officer. While we may not be able to there with them at the time they are first pulled over, we can help them to be prepared and help facilitate the interaction. Here are a few tips that may help:
1. Always be prepared by keeping your driving documents together and within reach.
2. For ease of access store your documents in a ReadyReg folio and attach it to the dash or over the sun visor.
3. Be alert; as soon as you realize that you are being pulled over, use your signal to indicate to the officer that you are going to pull over to the right shoulder.
4. Open both front windows and wait for the officer to approach.
The most important thing to remember is to stay calm.
